Brakes:

  • Consider putting 2mm-wide slots in your brake shoes for dust slots. Cutting the slots at an angle can help direct the dust out.
  • When inspecting new shoes, make sure the brake material is flush on both sides along the shoe.
  • Check the shoes for at least 95% contact for even wear. If you have to adjust more than 5 or 6 star teeth’s worth, then you need to check for an issue.
  • Use your brakes hard—the way the German’s intended—or else they will glaze. To remove the glaze use an emery cloth.
  • Repack front wheel bearings every 30k miles with 50cc of high-temp grease per wheel.

Washing Your 356

Tech Tip for washing your 356Most, if not all, 356 owners will cover the engine with a towel or large sheet to keep the engine as dry as possible during washing.  Forgetting to remove the towel or sheet before start up WILL result in catastrophic damage to the engine. Broken fan belt, damaged pulley, damaged plug and ignition wires, even the carbs can be damaged.

As a reminder to remove the towel from the engine, I put a piece of tape over the ignition switch before I turn the water on.

It saved my A-- once.
