October 25th Drive to Natural Bridge State Park

Drei Staaten Gruppe members enjoyed a beautiful Sunday drive from New Richmond, Ohio to the Kentucky Natural Bridge State Park in east central Kentucky. The day started out cool and foggy down by the river, but soon cleared as we crossed the river in Maysville. The group leaving New Richmond included Fred and Carol Uhlmann, Carl Iseman, Steve and Marie Leiding, Stan and Nancy Yarrish, and Russell Clarke and good friend Donna. Russell was only able to join us to Maysville where he split off to drive back up the river on the Ky side. In Paris, Ky we met up with Bill Combs who drove over from Lexington, and Mike Aspirito who joined us from Paris, Ky to the Park entrance in his 1960 roadster.

The day was excellent, the roads were ideal for Porsches. We drove by some beautiful farms on the road into Paris, Ky. The fall colors only added to the beauty of the drive! For those that drove all the way to the park, we enjoyed lunch in the lodge restaurant. After lunch, four members decided to take the ski lift to the top of the hill to explore the Natural Bridge.

The following excerpt is taken from the history page of the Natural Bridge Resort Park website. It describes the geological aspects of the Natural Bridge.

History of Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Established in 1926

The sandstone arch that is called Natural Bridge has stood for millenniums. The arch is 78 feet in length, 65 feet high, 12 feet thick, and 20 feet wide. Some geologists believe that the stunning natural sandstone arch is at least a million years old. There are other natural archways in the area, but none have gained the prominence of Natural Bridge. Since 1889, visitors have made the trip to the eastern Kentucky Mountains to see this amazing natural wonder.

Natural Bridge is composed of what is known in geological terms as Pottsville conglomeratic sandstone. Large blocks of stone falling off either side of a narrow sandstone ridge caused the first opening that began the transformation of the sandstone outcropping into an archway. The weathering process, along with the root systems of plants, continued to develop the unique archway that makes up Natural Bridge.
